Study And Control Trial Of Insect Pest Infestation On Wooden Furniture Using Azadirachta Indiga Extract

ABSTRACT

This research on insect pest infestation on furniture took place between the months of August to December 2007 in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike Abia state and her environs. A pesticide was applied at points of infestation so as to weaken and kill the boring insects, which were eventually collected and identified. A total of 5 species of insects belonging to 2 orders were observed to be responsible for causing very serious damages to the wood: Damage clone to the furniture by these insects as recorded was 26.0% while that with 'no damage' was 74.0%. This shows that the rate of insect pest infestation and damage done to furniture within this study area is moderate. It was also observed that wooden materials that were used in construction without pretreatment suffered the highest level of infestation while those pretreated suffered little 01. no significant infestation. Laboratory trials with control wood pieces for cross infestation recorded 41 .7% and 58.3% for no cross infestation. The cross infestation noticed on the control did not occur with wood pieces subjected to A. hid/cc, treatment as 100% no cross infestation was recorded on these wood piece
