Microbiological Qualities Of Some Swimming Pools Found In Umuahia.

ABSTRACT

 Microbiological qualities of some swimming pools found in Umuahia was evaluated for the presence of bacteria and fungi. A total of 8 swimming pools was used in this investigation. They included Benac, Smile more, Latinos, Damgrete, Villa roy, New age, Ocean view and Eastern comfort hotel swimming pools were used in this study, The Total Bact·.!rial Count ranged between 1.40x10cfu/ml - 2.36x10cfu/ml. The Total Fungal Counts ranged between 1,03x10'cfu/ml - 8.90x10cfu/ml. Four isolates include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, , .. Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Three Fungi species isolated includes Penicillium sp, Aspergillus sp and Rhizopus sp. Highest occurrence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were observed in Damgret, Benac, Smile more and New age hotel swimming pool water. Latino and Villa roy have the least presence of bacteria species with only the presence of Proteus vulgaris.The occurrence of fungal species in swimming pools were more prevalence Villa, New age, Smile more, Damgret, while Ocean view, swimming pool had the least occurrence of fungi. Only Rhizopus sp. was present. The physicochemical analysis includes the pH, BOD, DO, Hardness, Turbidity, Alkalinity, IDS, sulphate, Nitrate, chlorine were determined. The study recommends improvement in personal hygiene of swimmers, adequate disinfection of the pools and enforcement of standards by government.
