Household Preference For Value Added Meat Types (A Study Of Beef And Chevon In Umuahia North L.G.A Of Abia State, Nigeria)

ABSTRACT
The study focused on Household Preference for Value Added Meat Types and it wants to examine the need for effective and efficient ways by which the household can consume healthily types of meat and the problems associated with the meat types so as to ensure good and healthy living standards. The issue that motivated the research in this topic is cases of bad habit of meat intake in terms of nutrients factors of meat types. The main objective of this research work is to determine the preference of household consumption for value-added meat types using Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State as the study area. In other to achieve the objective of the study, both secondary and primary data were collected using review of related literature and questionnaire respectively, the questionnaire were analyzed, and two hypotheses formulated were tested with Chi-square statistical technique. The result showed that the two null hypotheses were accepted. The findings of the results shown that there was no significant relationship between the value of the meat and preference of the buyers as well as the health nutrients of the meat which means that even when the value is been added there is no additional nutrient to the meat. Also, conclusions were reached that healthier diets could increase the purchase and consumption for value-added beef and chevon. From nontraditional meat source with decreased fat, lower cholesterol and less sodium. The recommendations were also made which include that government should introduced price intervention programme in order to stabilize the fluctuation in meat prices, there should also be policy measures that will ensure increase in purchasing power of people's income which will invariably contribute positively to the improvement of nutritional status of the people.
