ABSTRACT

The approach to the production of single cell protein (SCP) from synthetic glucose medium and breadfruit hull hydrolysate by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (Baker's Yeast) was studied under microaerobic conditions. Microaerobic conditions were provided by the use of flasks with sterilized cotton wool plugs. 75 ml of the cultured hydrolysate was dispensed into seven flasks and the same was done for the synthetic glucose medium seperately. The following parameters: specific gravity, brix, pH, volumetric weight of the experimental medium, titratable acidity, ethanol and temperature were monitored for 13 hours. Daily parameters such as pH, cell yield and specific gravity were monitored. The results obtained with the synthetic medium showed better growth. There was a progressive decrease in brix and specific gravity during fermentation. Also, there was an increase in cell yield, volumetric weight of the experimental medium and crude protein of the SCP.
