ABSTRACT
Dyslipidemia which includes not only quantitative but also qualitative abnormalities of lipoprotein plays a significant role in the proatherogenesis ofvascular complications in diseases. Hypercholesterolemia is associated with serious health risks, increased mortality. The aim ofthis study is to determine the body weight changes and lipid profile values in monosodium glutamate intoxicated wister rats co-treated with different solvents extract of Dacryodesedulis. To achieve this, a total of 48 rats were shared into 8 groups of 6 animals each. Group 1 received food and water while group 2 received 800mg/kg monosodium glutamate. Group 3 was co-treated sylimarin while the other treatment groups were treated with ethanol fraction, methanol fraction, ethylacetete fraction, N-hexane fraction and aqueous fraction. The result of the lipid profile showed significant (p<0.05) increase in the LDL, VLDL, Cholesterol and triglyceride of the MSG group coupled with significant reduction in HDL. However, the different fractions all showed significant (p<0.05) decrease of in LDL, VLDL, cholesterol and triglyceride with concomitant significant (p<0.05) increase in HDL concentration across the groups. The Nhexane notably exhibited this trend the most thereby giving the possible initiative of having the most anti-lipidemic activity of all the treatment fractions. There was also positive weigh gain across all the groups with the MSG showing highest weigh gain after the control group while the N-hexane fraction showed the lowest weight gain. In conclusion, it could be said that different solvents extract of Dacryodesedulisshowed antilipidemic activity with the N-hexane fraction showing the most property.
