ABSTRACT
This study examined the bacteriological analysis of tap water samples in Michael Okpara University of agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia state. A total number of six (6) different water taps were taken. Samples were collected from male hostel tap, Pcmulc Hostel Tap, Admin Tap, Merchandise Restaurant Tap, Postgraduate Tap and Generator House Tap. The water samples were analyzed using multiple tube fermentation method. Pour plate method by identification of bacterial isolates were also carried out. The bacteriological analysis result showed that Pseudomonas species were present in all the samples, 6( I 00%), E.coli and Klebsiela species in 3(50%), Enterobacler species in 2(33%), Staphylococcus species in 4(67%) and Proteus species in I ( 17%). All the samples showed no growth of Salmonella and Vibro species. The presence of coliforms in these water samples is an indication of fecal contamination and high value of heterotrophic counts shows ineffective water treatment. The implication of those results is that the water poses a health risk to the students and other used that rely on them as the only source of domestic water supply
