ABSTRACT

Operating and financial synergies resulting/rum mergers and acquisitions makes it an effective growth and survival strategy adopted by companies especially during the period of depression in an economy. Given the long spell of depression of the Nigerian economy, this study was carried out to appraise how companies were able to use mergers and acquisitions as a growth and survival strategy over the years. The study made use of pr/man' data to support the statistical analysis. The data was' obtained from administration ojques'iionnaires in afield siirve The data collected from the returned questionnaires tere analysed using descriptive statistic, regression analysis and Z-tesi. The empirical result indicated that return on investment i'as' a positive and significant increasing function of mergers and acquisitions and there was ci signi/lccint c/i/fei"ence in pro/ltab iiit oj companies in the pre and post mergers and acquisition period. Recommendations made ii'ere that companies sho u/cl alwcivs take ac/vantage of opportunities of mergers and acquisitions whenever they are available; they should learn to master the corporate integration initiative of speed during mergers and acquisitions and should have a c/early defined types of s nergies to be optimized before going into the exercise.
