ABSTRACT

Senna alata L.is a medicinal plant containing high antioxidant properties that play an ~ important role in the prevention of various degenerative diseases in the society and has ~ been followed with great interest in phytochemical and pharmacological research because of its excellent traditional values. The present study is aimed at investigating ;their antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties. The antioxidant activity of S alata' ! ethanol leaf extract was accessed by in vitro experimental parameters such as DPPH (1,1- ' Diphery-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity and nitric oxide radical assay. I the present study, DPPH was found to be concentration-dependent manner. The result { showed that S. alata ethanol leaf extract displayed potent in vitro antioxidant activity that may be attributed to the phenolic compounds present. Also the result of the in vivo : hypoglycemic activity of ethanol leaf extract of S. alata in alloxan induced diabetic rats at ! different concentration of 500, 250,125 and 62.5 mg/ml respectively indicated that this plant leaf extract posses hypoglycemic properties. Thus, this study strongly recommends the use of S, alata ethanol leaf extract as antidiabetic agent.
