ABSTRACT

Antimicrobial effects of Pterocarpus santalinoides and Senna alata on  some pathogens (Escherchia coli, Staphylococccus aureus and Micros porum audouinii) were carried out. Different solvents used for the extraction of the plant were Aqueous (cold) and ethanol. The minimium inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Aqueous (cold) of Senna alata extract showed inhibition on Staphylococcus aureus and Microsporum audouinii were 0.025mg/ml and 0.625mg/ml respectively and none on Escherichia coli. The aqueous ·(cold) extract of Pterocarpus santalinoides showed inhibition . on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at the MIC of 0.25mg/ml and none on Microsporum audouinii while the MIC of its ethanol extract on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was-0.25mg/ml and 0.125mg/ml respectively. The MIC of aqueous (cold) extract of Pterocarpus santalinoides on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was 0.25mg/ml while no ' inhibition was shown on Microsporum audouinii. This justifies· therapeutic uses of Pterocarpus santalinoides and Senna alata. Further investigations can combine the plant extracts for possible synergetic effects
