ABSTRACT

The study examined the acceptance of family planning by families in Umuahia. Factors that influence the acceptance of family planning by families were determined. The problems associated with use of family planning methods were also identified. Three villages were selected using purposive sampling method. Validated structured questionnaires were administered to men & women by simple random method. Two hundred and ten fully completed questionnaires were returned. Frequencies, simple percentages and mean were used in analyzing the data. Results from the data revealed that one of the major factors that affect the acceptance of family planning of families was lack of counseling as indicated by the respondents at Ohuhu (3.69), Ubakala (3.70) and Ibeku (3.65). Results also showed that fear that it might cause a health problem was one of the predominant problems that families have in their acceptance of family planning as indicated by the mean responses at Ohuhu (3.74), Ubakala (3.60) and Ibeku (3.62). These families suggested that there should be adequate counseling on firmly planning methods. This will help remove the fear they have about family planning. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that family life education should be taught to couples as a measure towards improving the acceptance of family planning throughout Nigeria.
