ABSTRACT

A survey of urinary tract infections (UTIs) among women of child bearing age attending clinic at Nvurunvu Health Centre, Uturu, Abia State, was conducted between September - October, 20 I 3. A total of 50 urine samples were examined. The overall prevalence of bacteriuria was 60%. The prevalence of bacteriuria according to age groups was 76.9% for age group 25- 34 years, 62.8% for 45 - 54 years and 45.5% for age group 15 - 24 years. The prevalence of bacteriuria among married women was 91.6% and 46.6% among the single women. Pregnant women had a prevalence rate of 84.6% while the prevalence rate was 85.7% among the non-pregnant women. The high prevalence rates of UTIs reported in this study should be of a great concern. as not only do UT!s pose a threat to health. but they also impose an economic and social burden due to· the stigma associated with these infections.
